The phrase four-letter word refers to a set of English-language words written with four letters which are considered profaneincluding common popular or slang terms for excretory functionssexual activity and genitaliaterms relating to Hell or damnation when used outside of religious contexts or slurs. The "four-letter" claim refers to the fact that many but not all English "swear words" are incidentally four-character monosyllables. This description came into use during the first half of the twentieth century.

Your Social Security card only lists your name and Social Security number — not your gender. However, SSA maintains information in its computer records on everyone who has a Social Security number, including name, date of birth, and gender.

I believe that the somewhat evasive response of the Catholic Education Service to new guidelines for Relationships and Sex Education is compatible with a long-term reluctance by the Church to teach about vocation, anthropology and the role of human sexuality. The perils of indiscriminate sexual experimentation and a contraceptive mentality were sidestepped. In an increasingly competitive and individualistic culture, marriage or celibacy were downplayed as generators of social capital, and vocation was reduced to the pursuit of certain careers.
