A 15th-Century collection of erotic stories called The Perfumed Garden challenges Western perceptions about sex and the Arab world, writes Joobin Bekhrad. When it comes to lust and literature, there is often a tendency to conjure particular images: shades of grey, a little girl named Lolita, or a writhing Lady Chatterley perhaps, and little birds fluttering about every which way. The Kama Sutra is a classical Hindu text relating to the art of human sexual behavior and pleasure. The dense text was originally written in traditional Sanskrit by Vatsyayana, an Indian philosopher and sage who is believed to have lived between the first and sixth century of the Common Era. The chapters within these sections focus on social norms, eroticism, love customs, and compatibility beliefs of the time.
The first English translation of the 1,year-old Kamasutra was filtered through the mind of a Victorian man, so it might come as no surprise to learn that it has flaws--particularly when it comes to female sexuality. A new look at the ancient Indian textbook of erotic love has fleshed out--and in some cases corrected--the original translation from Sanskrit into English, done in by explorer and writer Sir Richard Burton. The task wasn't easy, even for Wendy Doniger, a history of religions professor at the University of Chicagoan expert on Hindu mythology and a Sanskrit scholar.
In the mids, when I first heard of it, the Kama Sutra was, along with The Perfumed Garden and Venus in Fursconsidered licentious and filthy, the very gateway to damnation. In the London suburbs in the early 60s, if a young man sought knowledge of sexual matters he had to traipse up to the West End to watch European films, and if particularly desperate during a tiresome evening might even be forced to turn to literature. My father owned copies of contraband such as Lady Chatterley's LoverLolita and other such serious stuff, along with Harold Robbins.
