The groups fleet include class racing yachts that date back to the s, as well as non class sailing models and commercial toys from a bygone era. Members of Clapham will still be racing their International One Metre yachts, and the joint meeting should provide something to interest anyone curious about model yachts. There were port-and-starboard incidents, a mark-hitting disputed by the Skipper involved but witnessed by his opponents and a T-boning of one yacht by another. Heady stuff — and not a crew member aboard any of the yachts!

It is a tremendously fun and absorbing activity which is very easy to get the hang of, and people of all ages and abilities can join in. From the earliest days of Golden Gate Park, tensions have been high between model boat lovers and full-sized boat sailors competing for water space on Stow Lake. The inevitable nautical battle was averted in with the construction of the shallow, artificial Spreckels Lake, filled by diverting fresh water from the wells at the Dutch Windmill, and dedicated specifically to model yachting. The San Francisco Model Yacht Club, founded inis the oldest such club in the Americas and has about active members.
